Toxicity as a cause of illness
Generally speaking, there are not many causes of illness. Primarily they are:
- Physical trauma
- Emotional stress
- Nutritional deficiency
Although biotherapeautic drainage protocols can have a role in illness caused by any of the above, it is primarily used to help symptoms related to toxicity.
There are may ways to define toxity. For the purposes of this article, a toxin is simply an agent which is in high enough concentration to disrupt cellular function and act as a poison. The toxin may something we're exposed to from the outside (ie. lead, mercury, plastics), or produced by the body as part of cellular function (ie. ammonia). Although pathogens such as viruses are not typically considered toxins, for the purpose of this discussion they can be included.
It's essential that the body be able to recognize these toxins and deal with them properly. In fact many symptoms are in fact the body's attempt to excrete toxins. This is covered in detail on the homotoxicology page.
Most nutritional detoxification plan focus on the liver and digestive system. Since the liver is the primary organ of elimination it's important to give it the nutrients it needs to remove toxins. Once that happens the toxins need to make their way through the digestive system to be removed from the body. Poor digestion can cause toxins to be reabsorbed.
The problem with this sort of "detoxification" is that the liver can only detoxify substances which are delivered to it through the blood and lymphtic system.
Many times toxins are either stuck or sequestered away elsewhere. Area's of comprimised function do to accumulation of toxins are colled foci. Some examples of foci can include:
- Dental infection: lingering infection due to dental work, or infection. This may not be picked up by the dentist on x-ray.
Fibroid or fibrocystic breast disease: can be understood as the body storing away toxins in less essential repreductive areas.
- Thyriod: inflammation of nodues.
- Sinues congestion: the body will uses sinuses as auxiliary route of elimination. At times toxins may become stuck there, causing accumulation of mucus and associated symptoms.
- Cancer: accumulated toxins eventually cause defifferentiation of cells.
This is a very much abbreviated list. To keep things simple can say that with regards to toxicity:
- Inflammation is tbe body's attempt to catabolize toxins
- Cysts, polyps, nodules represent the body sequestering away toxins it is not able to elmination
If you are not sure if this process applies to your condition, if there is either an area of chronic inflammation, or decreased function, then it probably does.
Additionally this process may be going on for some time without noticeable symptoms. For example, it's common for doctors to see cysts on MRI, such as in the liver or kidneys. Instead of telling people that their body is forming cysts inside of internal organs, probably due to rentention and storage of some toxins, and therefor it's best to take preventative action now - patients are instead told that it's "incidental" and not to worry about it (excpet to keep an eye on it, for radical procedures if it finally does become a problem).
Biotherapeutic drainage compared to homeopathy
Since the body can store toxins away virtually anywhere, it's important to initiate therapies that will liberate toxins from storeage.
For example, in the case of chronic dental foci - (assuming any needed dental work is performed as well) a protocol can be formed to help the body move out toxins from the soft tissue around the dental area. Simply taking lots of detox herbs for the liver is not going to do this.
In biotherapeautic drainge, low potency compound homeopathics are used to stimulate the release of toxins from storage. This is a different type of homeopathy from tradition use of high potency single remedies for the whole person (may be called traditional or constitutional homeopathy).
|Traditional Homeopathy||Biotherapeutic drainage|
|Single - high potency remedy||Multiple - low potency remedy|
|A full discussion of homeopathic potencies is beyond the scope of this article - to keep things simple higher potency with work on the constitution of the entire person (physical, emotional, mental) in a deep way. Low potencies work on more acture, physical symptoms|
|Each remedy carefully chosen for effect on the entire body||Remedies selected to facilitate the function of or detoxification of specific systems|
|Properly prescribed Biotherapeutic Drainage protocols are holistic, when used to clear out toxins that are at the cause of illness. However, individual remedies are chosen for local effect, not to work on the whole person like a single high potency homeopathic does|
|Proper prescription typically requires extensive intake and based upon the patients uniuqe and peculiar symptoms||Selection of remedies based upon areas of poor function which need to be supported, and not selected according to traditional homeopathic intake|
What form of homeopathy is better
Neither form is necessarily better than the other. Some practitioners feel that due to the incredible toxic load we are exposed to now (as comparted to 200 years ago when homeopathy began) it is difficult to get a clear picture of what the correct single remedy is. A traditional homeopathic intake is based upon the patients unique symptoms. The goals is presribe the correct remedy to work on the patients overall constitution. Signs of acute poisoning will block the physicans view of the case, making a proper single homeopathic prescription complicated. So for example is someone is chronically ill, but also eating a bad, allergenic diet, eating food microwaved in plastic containers, along with other toxic exposures and emotional stress at work, all this will cloud the view of proper homeopathic prescription, for most symptoms are acute responses to toxicity. Drainage protocols can be used to help the body release toxins and clear up the picture.
The best treatment is what makes most sense for a particular patient. Depending upon the situation that may be a single homeopathic, a biotherapeutic drainage protrol or something different. Biotherapeutic drainage protocols can work well with other modalitis. This includes in combination with single constitutional homeopathics, nutritional supplements, herbal medicine or other therapies.
Isopathics are a treatment which uses minute ammounts of metabolities from either various fungus, or bacteria to stimulate and regulate immune system activity. Go to the page on isopathics for more information.
